Double End Bag Techniques

The double end bag should be a staple in every boxer’s training regime. It’s an underutilized piece of boxing equipment that takes practice to get used to. This little inflated bag can be intimidating and some beginners shy away from using because of the fear of being embarassed.

To help you become natural at using the double end bag, here are some tips and techniques:

  • Start Off With the Basics – Don’t try and get fancy straight away by throwing hooks and uppercuts. Instead, focus on single, double and triple jabs, then occasionally mix in the cross behind those jabs. The jab and the straight will be the two easiest punches to land consistently on the double end bag.
  • Timing and Accuracy Over Power – A double end bag offers very little resistance and its constant movement makes it difficult to land more than one full powered punch at a time. If you want to work on pure punching power, use a heavy bag instead. For a double end bag, you must utilize timing and accuracy over all other attributes.
  • Use Reflexes and Rhythm – In order to get a grasp of timing and accuracy on the double end bag, you must set a steady rhythm that you’re comfortable with. Even though hitting the double end bag relies a lot of eye-hand coordination, it moves so fast that your eyes simply cannot follow it. This is where your natural reflexes take over and a “feel” for when to throw the punch. It’s something that is hard to explain, but once you’re used to it, you’ll begin to understand.
  • Mixing in Hooks and Uppercuts – Once you’ve got the basic punches down to a tee, you can mix in hooks and uppercuts which require different angles and punch technique. If you’re hitting the bags with jabs and straights, the bag will be moving back and forth so landing the hook can be tricky. When you do land it, it’ll change the trajectory of the bag. You’ll need to reset somewhat, and set the rhythm again. As for the uppercut, you can only effectively use a half uppercut (unless it’s a hookercut / uppercut hook), which should be relatively easy to mix in among the jabs and straights as it follows the same path.

When you become a natural at using the double end bag, it’s time to mix in some defensive techniques:

  • Slipping the Bag – After landing your jabs and straights, move your head from side-to-side to avoid the bag as it bounces back and forth. You can even bob and weave under it. The rapid and sometimes erratic movement of the bag is the closest piece of boxing equipment you’ll get to the mimicking of a punch, so it’s immensely useful to practice your slipping reflexes.
  • Circling the Bag – If the double end bag is mounted from ceiling to floor rather than on a boxing bag stand, then you should have enough room to use your footwork to circle the entire bag. This is perfect for landing punches from different angles. Get use to coordinating your foot movement simultaneously with your punches, which even some seasoned fighters find difficult. The simplest method to begin with is sidestepping while throwing single, double or triple jabs.
  • Bouncing In and Out – This technique may perhaps be the most difficult as it requires more athleticism and blends offense with defense. It involves throwing a few punches, bending at the knees and waist to avoid the return fire and bouncing backwards to the desired distance. If you’d like to end with a “counterpunch”, then you’d have to be within punching range when bouncing backwards.

The double end bag is so versatile and helps to refine such a wide variety of skills that’s perfectly suited for hand-to-hand combat that it’ll be foolish not to make regular use of it.

Types Of Double End Bags

The double end bag is a round bag (or a double rounded bag) that contains an inflatable bladder, and it’s held up by elastic cables on the top and bottom, and swings back and forth, and side-to-side as you hit the bag.

The two most common types of double end bags that you’ll see are:

  • Single Bag: This comprises of a varied sized round ball.
  • Mexican Style Double-Double Bag: This type of double end bag is a single bag that’s shaped like the number 8, which gives you two targets that resembles an opponent’s head and body. There are variations of this style bag, that comprises of two single bags instead of one long bag.

To get the right height of the bag, the general rule of thumb is to have the center of the bag at your shoulder height when you’re standing up straight. When you bend at the knees slightly, your face should be level with the bag.
